Now that Spring is here there’s bound to be a few showers here and there before Summer arrives. Wet weather means that extra precautions need to be taken when lifting using vacuum-powered handling equipment. We advise that you should avoid operating vacuum lifting equipment in the rain, this includes our glass and cladding vacuum lifters and glazing robots. It is essential to keep your vacuum lifting equipment dry as water can cause serious damage to internal components. These pieces of kit should not be exposed to heavy rain, left outside for prolonged periods in wet weather uncovered or submerged in water. If water reaches the machine’s electrical components it could cause damage to the lifter and make it unsafe to use.

Before attempting a lift you should always ensure that both the suction pads and load are dry and clean. Any water or dirt that is left on the load surface reduces the lifter’s effectiveness and resistance to slippage, potentially causing the load to fall. Remove any residual moisture on your load using a squeegee or absorbent chamois cloth before using your vacuum lifter. To help counteract the risk of slippage, it’s important to regularly inspect the vacuum pads on your lifting machine. Read our blog to find out how to check that they are in good condition.

The reason for ensuring that your load and suction pads are clean and dry is not only to prevent slippage but also very importantly to prevent any water, dirt or grit from being sucked into the components of the machine during vacuum application. Any water or debris in the machine can cause valves to leak and general corrosion in the system. If any water ends up in the lifter’s vacuum reserve tanks, this will reduce the tanks capacity and the lifter’s safety factor for supporting the load. Water can damage your lifter even further in below freezing conditions, this is why we recommend that vacuum lifters should only be used in temperatures above 0°C. Water expands when it freezes and turns to ice, so any moisture in the lifter’s internal system could potentially block airflows, break a vacuum seal or damage the machine’s electric motors.

Read our winter weather safety guide to find out more about how to lift safely in windy and cold conditions.
How Does a Vacuum Lifter Work?
When handling large and heavy materials manual handling is typically advised against due to impracticalities and the high potential for injury. Vacuum lifters take away the need for the majority of manual handling as once the material is attached it can then be lifted and manipulated into place. With the ability to rotate the material and hold it both vertically and horizontally the vacuum lifter presents an advantage over the limited capabilities of a person handling it.
Why is a Vacuum Lifter Used?
As stated above vacuum lifters are unbeaten in their capabilities in comparison to what a person can achieve by themselves or in a group. By providing a continuous grip on the materials there is no worry of dropping it and it can be held in place while you adjust angles or finish installing it. The use of a vacuum lifter reduces damage to your materials by reducing the ability for human error or accidents. When handling materials manually there is a chance of the materials slipping out of hands, people tripping, or an injury occurring when moving the materials. They also increase work productivity as fewer people are needed for handling larger materials and are typically only needed for operating the vacuum lifter/crane holding the lifter and assisting in the positioning of the materials for more precise jobs.
How Does a Vacuum Lifter Work?
A vacuum lifter will have at least one vacuum cup which is made of rubber so that it can easily mould to surfaces with a tilting ability. As the name suggests a vacuum is created through the vacuum lifter pumping the air out of the cup, so when the cup is placed against a flat surface they will stick together. A seal is created as through the air inside the cup being removed it creates a difference in atmospheric pressure to the outside of the cup. This means the external pressure then pushes against the suction cup and sticks it to the surface.
Types of Vacuum Lifters
Depending on the materials, shapes, and textures you are working with the type of vacuum lifter you need will change. Each machine type will have different capabilities such as glass lifters only being suited for non-porous materials, but a stone lifter has the technology for lifting porous stones.
Curved and Corner Lifters
Likely one of the more unique but incredibly useful designs of vacuum lifters is curved and corner lifters. They remove the difficulty of installing awkwardly shaped glass units and rounded balustrades. GGR Group's CladKing. The combined lifting power and excellent flexible swivel arms of these lifters is ideal for any glazing job that needs that extra flexibility. Some of our favourite curved vacuum lifters are the Hydraulica 2100 Curved which features a 2100kg max capacity and a 360˚ power rotation. Our Corner Lifter also appeared at Battersea Power Station to help with the installation of some corner units at the new art’otel. This was a special product that required expert lifting products for such an installation.
Smooth Glass Vacuum Lifters
Suitable for lifting glass, plastic boards, ceramic plates, sheet metals, and coated boards, smooth glass vacuum lifters are versatile in their uses, able to lift the majority of non-porous materials. Assisted by features such as hydraulic tilt for easier positioning and manual lockable rotation. The Hydraulica 1000-B has two hydraulic rams which create seamless power tilting and a 90˚powered hydraulic tilt, which GGR Group found was perfect for manoeuvring glass under an overhang in this project. Another of our glass lifters is the strongest in our range, lifting up to 6000kg the Hydraulica 6000 is an unrivalled machine with a 360˚ electric powered rotation.
Textured Glass Vacuum Lifter
These vacuum lifters have a unique closed-cell foam seal that can mould to the textured glass panels so that a vacuum can still be formed. Suitable for lifting stippled, etched, frosted, and other textured glass these lifters are suited to a range of projects. The Ultra-Glaze 1000 has the highest lifting capacity of our textured lifters at 1000kg with 30 specialist vacuum cups. The suction pads are individually adjustable which can be isolated for the accommodation of different panels. There is also our Multi-Glaze vacuum lifter which while smaller has a 400kg lifting capacity and has a dual circuit system for advanced safety.
Cladding Vacuum Lifter
Cladding lifters have unique vacuum cups are suited to the unique surfaces of the cladding. All the GGR Group cladding lifters are designed for use on composite sandwich panels and other non-porous materials (subject to testing). One of our more popular models is the CladKing which offers a 320kg lifting capacity which is compatible with composite panels such as Rockspan, Paroc, Isocab, and Kingspan KS1000 series. Lift horizontal panels up to 12m in length and vertical cladding up to 18m long. The CladKing is also used in many projects such as this job in Cheshire. GGR Group's CladKing cladding vacuum lifter.
Stone Vacuum Lifter
Due to the porous nature of stone, stone vacuum lifters are designed to have a continuous pump to maintain the vacuum needed to lift it. They are suited for rough stone surfaces, concrete/stone slabs, and steel plates. The highest-capacity stone vacuum lifter is the GSK4600 which has a capacity of 4600kg. An onboard battery pack provides the machine with a 12-hour operating cycle along with an auto cut-off pump for when it is not in use. The MRTA611 GRC is one of our newer stone lifters which is a truly versatile machine as it is able to lift GRC panels, patterned, blasted and shattered toughened laminate, flamed, honed or polished stone slabs. The Hunterian in Glasgow knew they could trust the Unic URW-094 mini spider crane to handle their ancient Roman artefacts with care so they enlisted our help in setting up their latest exhibition. The compact 094 mini crane had no problems reaching the museum’s brand new Roman gallery on the third floor and lifted 17 historic sandstone slabs onto their plinths in the exhibit. The sculptures were distance markers recovered from the Antonine Wall which was built by Romans occupying Scotland in c.140 AD. With precious relics safely put in pride of place, the new exhibition at The Hunterian is ready to open this week, on the 16th September. We can’t help but think those Roman soldiers could have done with having a Unic mini crane on site when building that wall!
As Number One for Lifting Solutions and with over 25 years of experience, GGR Group were recently selected for a glass installation in Manchester City Centre. With the long-running project on a front-facing building on Manchester’s busiest retail street nearing an end, it was our innovative products that saw it completed on time with the help of our efficient team. GF42 Pick and Carry Crane and P11104 Glass Vacuum Lifter before a lift. Given the limited available storage space on site and the imminent arrival of the glazing screens, GGR faced significant pressure to install them efficiently and within the 24-hour timescale stipulated. Adding to the complexity, the site posed several challenges, including limited setup space, a 9-metre installation height, a narrow recess only 1.4 metres wide by 2.4 metres deep, and the added risk of two air conditioning units that needed to be avoided within the recess. Manoeuvring the 3.5-metre-long and 1.2-metre-wide glass unit into the narrow recess while ensuring the safety of the installation team presented additional difficulty. After surveying the project, GGR Group tailored a Lift Plan that included two of our specialised Mini Cranes – a UNIC URW-095 Mini Spider Crane, a GF42 Pick and Carry Crane, and a P11104 Glass Vacuum Lifter were the chosen combination for success. The URW-095 and GF42 from our innovative product range proved to be the perfect solution for the project. The URW-095 provided the necessary reach for the tallest glass unit, while the GF42’s manoeuvrability allowed it to reach the awkward angle of the recessed panel. Additionally, the P11104 with a maximum capacity of 320kg, 180-degree rotation and 90-degree tilt was an ideal choice for handling all glazing units, including the recessed unit. Our P11104 made the installation of the glass effortless and secure thanks to its secondary safety dual vacuum circuits to hold the glass in place. The lifter’s flexibility in configuration and overall capacity made it an ideal choice for switching between three different glass units. The URW095 Mini Spider Crane, with its small but powerful design, was able to navigate through narrow side streets and access tight set-up areas using its variable angle outriggers and minimal footprint. The GF42, although slightly larger than the URW095, was able to manoeuvre with ease in the tight spaces thanks to its 180-degree hydraulic steering and radio remote control. This crane was positioned effortlessly to install the challenging recessed unit making light work of this awkward lift. GF42 Pick and Carry Crane and P11104 Glass Vacuum Lifter ready to lift 3.5m glazing. Thanks to the specialised features of the products, the work was safely and efficiently installed, preventing any delays in project completion and keeping the public safe on this busy high street location. GGR Group’s Team, who are highly trained and have CPCS and RTITB Accredited qualifications, worked alongside the installation team to overcome the obstacles they encountered during the lift, resulting in the successful and safe completion of the lifts. The City of London Academy contacted our customer needing a broken glazing unit replaced. Faced with a 226kg unit situated 11m above the lift area the customer contacted GGR Group for a suitable lifting solution. Renowned for our compact cranes we could offer a selection of machines for this glazing challenge, ideal for lifting in confined areas. GGR performed a lift plan, site survey and risk assessment, selecting the Cube Crane for this lifting task. This mini spider crane is designed to simplify the most challenging lifts with its compact design, multi-position outriggers and three-section derricking boom. Facing restricted access and a confined lifting area GGR’s specialist compact lifting solutions were essential for this challenging project. Located next to a busy main road the Cube Crane was delivered within the confines of the lane and pavement closure. With the tightest access point measuring 1700mm, the crane was easily tracked through the space, only measuring 1500mm wide when compact. GGR’s experienced operator setup the crane within the confined entry to the property beside the staircase leading down to the doorway. Multi-position outriggers ensured safe and easy positioning without compromising on strength. The glazing unit for replacement was on the 2nd floor, 11m above the lift area. However, this was no challenge for the Cube Crane which comes with a 21.17m maximum lifting height, enabling access to some of the toughest lifting problems. Equipped with a radio remote control with bi-axis joysticks and feedback display the operator was provided with enhanced control of each minute movement of the crane. With a 6.3m distance between the crane and glazing this project also required a lifting solution with sufficient reach. Equipped with a knuckle boom able to be set at 85°, 90° and 95° angles which can also extend to up to 13.99m, this machine was essential for replacing the oversized 226kg unit.
Working inside a newly constructed London museum brings a unique set of challenges. Even in a new-build environment, confined internal spaces and sensitive surroundings often make standard lifting equipment impractical. For this project, GGR Group supplied a compact heavy lifting solution that was perfectly suited to the environment, utilising the Tracked Leveller 6.0 alongside the UNIC URW-706 Mini Spider Crane to support the lifting and movement of internal stair cores. Museum environments are rarely designed with heavy lifting in mind. Structural layouts, controlled working zones and sensitive environments require machinery that delivers high performance without a large footprint. The UNIC URW-706 Mini Spider Crane provided exactly that balance. Offering up to 6 tonnes of lifting capacity at a 3-metre radius, the crane delivered impressive power while remaining compact enough to operate within tight internal spaces. Its ability to work at heights of up to 7.2 metres, with further reach available via optional fly jib configurations, allowed stair core elements to be lifted and positioned with precision and control. Accurate placement was further enhanced through the crane’s remote-control operation, enabling the operator to maintain clear sightlines during lifts. This level of control is essential when working within occupied or sensitive buildings, where precision and safety are paramount. Once lifted, the challenge of transporting heavy components through carefully managed internal routes was addressed using the Tracked Leveller 6.0. With a carrying capacity of 6000kg, the Tracked Leveller is designed specifically for moving loads across inclines and uneven surfaces. Its unique Bi-Levelling technology automatically keeps the load level when travelling across vertical and horizontal slopes of up to 25°, ensuring stability and control even where floor levels change. The compact tracked design allowed the machine to manoeuvre easily within the museum, while its low ground pressure helped protect internal floor surfaces. Powered by a 48V rechargeable battery, the Tracked Leveller 6.0 operated quietly and emission-free indoors, meeting the environmental requirements often associated with public buildings. The flexibility of its bi-energy system also allows the same machine to switch between power sources when required, making it a highly versatile solution. By combining the lifting power and precision of the UNIC URW-706 Mini Spider Crane with the stable, controlled transport capabilities of the Tracked Leveller 6.0, GGR Group delivered a solution that supported safe, efficient installation without disruption to the surrounding structure.

GGR Group’s client recently completed a challenging glazing installation at Lake Windermere, where our Hydraulica 6000 Glass Vacuum Lifter was used to place a large, oversized glazing unit onto a lakeside boathouse. From the outset, the project presented two clear challenges. The first was the size of the glazing, which required high-capacity, specialist lifting equipment. The second was the location of the installation. The glazing unit measured 6 metres in length, covered an area of 16.29 m², and weighed 814 kg. Due to its size, weight, and positioning requirements, the project demanded specialist glass lifting equipment capable of delivering both capacity and control. Positioned directly on the edge of the lake, the side of the boathouse requiring glazing offered no access for lifting equipment. With the water immediately in front, there was no option to position a crane where the glass needed to be installed. To overcome this, the crane was set up on the opposite side of the building, requiring the glazing unit to be lifted up and over the roof before being installed on the lake-facing side. This created a blind lift challenge, with the crane operator unable to see the final landing position. The lift was coordinated using radio communication between the lift team and the crane operator, ensuring the load could be guided safely and accurately as it travelled over the structure. The Hydraulica 6000 was key to making this lift possible. With a lifting capacity of 6000kg and a max width of 8780mm, it handled the 814kg, 6000mm wide glazing unit with ease. Its four independent vacuum circuits, powered by on-board pumps, provided a secure and reliable grip throughout the lift, which was critical given the height and lack of direct visibility. As the unit cleared the roof and moved into position, control became the priority. The lifter’s electric powered rotation and hydraulic tilt allowed the team to make controlled adjustments to the glass, helping to align it correctly before installation without the need for excessive repositioning. The use of a remote control system on the Hydraulica 6000 allowed for fine, precise movements during the final stages of the lift. This ensured the glazing could be placed accurately, even with the constraints of the site and the nature of the blind lift. Despite the challenges, the installation was completed safely and efficiently, with the glazing unit positioned exactly as required. Projects like this highlight the importance of combining the right equipment with a well-planned lifting approach. When access is restricted and visibility is limited, having the ability to maintain control throughout the lift is what keeps the job moving. For contractors facing similar glazing challenges, GGR Group provides proven lifting solutions designed to perform in demanding environments.

Yet another swimming pool job for our Unic mini cranes! They are fast becoming essential pieces of equipment for poolside lifts and a recent project at a Barnsley School needed some compact lifting power to complete a tricky job. A Unic URW-094 went to Greenacre School in Barnsley, South Yorkshire over the half term break to work on their hydrotherapy pool. The school for 2-19 year old children with special needs required the safety beam to be fitted to the pool so moving pupils in and out of the pool would be easier. The 0.995 tonne capacity crane lifted the 400kg steel beam at a 3.5 radius so it could be fitted to the pool’s structure. The Unic mini crane was chosen as the area had very restricted access and, as you can see in the photo below, it was able to sit in the standard sized doorway with its boom reaching out to lift the beam to the required height. With the help of the mini crane the job was finished in no time at all and the pool was ready for the students’ return after their break.

A UNIC URW-095 mini spider crane from GGR’s Scottish depot went to The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to get a lesson in marine biology as it got an exclusive close look at their brand new exhibit, a whale skull. The 600mm wide mini crane travelled through the tight spaces in the museum to The Grand Gallery where this massive mammal’s skull was to be displayed as part of their world-renowned whale collection. The skull belongs to “Moby”, a 40ft long male sperm whale that tragically became stranded on the banks of the River Forth in 1997 after getting lost on his yearly migration from the Arctic to the Azores. Sperm whales have the largest brains of any modern or extinct animal and their giant skulls include many cone-shaped teeth are used for eating giant squid. The skull of this spectacular sea creature was lifted onto a 4 metre tall stand by the 0.995 tonne capacity spider crane in two sections. GGR’s lifting team first lifted the 4.7 metre long bottom jaw section then carefully positioned the larger 600kg main skull section on top of that. The LPG power mini crane was ideal for working in the museum around other exhibits as it has low-emissions and releases no toxic fumes. GGR’s compact cranes and lifting equipment have been used in a number of museums around the UK…

A UNIC URW-094 crane lifted Roman sandstone slabs at The Hunterian in Glasgow

A HOMER robot installed a stone sign at the Museum of Liverpool entrance

A UNIC URW-095 crane replaced Victorian lamp-posts at the World Museum Liverpool

A UNIC URW-376 crane lifted glass cabinets at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London

A G20 pick and carry crane lifted a fiberglass elephant at the Stratford Armouries Museum

A UNIC URW-376 crane installed a heating exchanger in the main exhibition hall at the Museum of Scottish Industrial Life

A Glassmax Giraffe fitted glazing for the ticket office at the Glasgow Museum of Transport

GGR’s range of hand cups are often used for safely handling glass cases and cabinets for smaller exhibits

In the world of lifting operations, there are always obstacles you’ll face where further innovation is required. Often with crane operations, your day-to-day lifting can be hindered by unreachable points of a building such as alcoves, balconies, and soffits. Overhang Beams, also known as cantilever beams, play a crucial role in supporting loads that extend beyond the edge of a structure or crane. With this below-the-hook attachment, you can counter the struggles associated with lifting in restricted access points with the extra reach this equipment provides. A Libro 600 3D Head Overhang Beam installing glass with views of London. Overhang Beams allow users to lift loads into spaces whereas just a crane may only be able to lift the load to just outside the needed location. With the Overhang Beam, the load can be placed precisely and safely without workers needing to struggle to push or pull it into the space.
Load Capacity
Our strongest Overhang Beam is the Libro 20000 offering 20 tonnes of lifting power which is ideal for use alongside tower and mobile cranes. However, this sort of lifting power is not always necessary for a project which is why we provide a number of cantilever beams to accommodate various requirements. When choosing your Overhang Beam it is important to factor in the weight of loads you intend to lift as well as the capacity of the crane the beam will be attached to. This is because the combined weight of the load and Overhang Beam may cause you to surpass the SWL of the crane.
Length and Reach
With such differences in the designs of even modern buildings as well as old features such as overhangs and soffits can fluctuate massively in size. This includes how deep they are which determines how much reach you will require of your Overhang Beam. At GGR Group the depth of overhang our beams can accommodate ranges between 550mm and 4.1m (or up to 5.3m with different attachments.) These different lengths allow operators to lift glazing and other loads easily into window openings and under overhangs. A Libro 12000 lifting at a multiplex.
Customisation and Adaptability
While Overhang Beams themselves are a below-the-hook customisation for cranes and other machines there are also additional attachments you can make use of to adapt them to your project. In our range of Libro Overhang Beams customisations include Overhang Beam glass lifters, 3D head glass lifter attachments, and the unique Corner Lifter attachment. The glass lifter customisations allow users to benefit from the full features of their Overhang Beam while installing glass which with just using a below-the-hood glass vacuum lifter may prevent. With the Corner Lifter, you can use it along with glass vacuum lifters to install unique corner glazing units as shown in a recent project at art’otel, Battersea Power Station. It can also be used with other below-the-hook attachments like stone lifters and cladding lifters. At GGR Group we have over 25 years of experience supplying lifting solutions to our customers. Overhang Beams offer workers with a way to safely and efficiently lift loads into soffits, overhangs, and other places with restricted access. For more advice on the best Overhang Beam for your project contact our team here.

Our range of specialist lifting equipment is regularly used for some of the trickiest and most complex glazing projects in the UK. The battery powered TMC25 articulated crawler crane and Hydraulica 1200 glass vacuum lifter were recently hired from GGR Group to help glaze the front of this new Nike shop in Westfield, London. Firstly, the TMC25 had to help lift and remove the hoarding from the shopfront to make way for the new glazing to be installed. Together, the TMC25 and Hydraulica 1200 Glass Vacuum Lifter then had to pick the glass from the glass stillages, rotate into an upright position, manoeuvre and guide into place to enable the fixers to install. The glass, weighing in at nearly a tonne and measuring a whopping 8 metres in length and 1.6 metres in width, was no challenge for our team of experienced operators and specialised lifting kit! The Hydraulica 1200 Glass Vacuum lifter was the ideal choice for this project thanks to its generous 1200kg lifting capacity and 90 degree powered hydraulic tilt, ideal for manoeuvring, lifting and rotating and placing oversized glass like this. The TMC25 articulated crawler crane was selected for this project due to its extremely compact working footprint at just 780mm wide. Its small chassis and heavy lifting power make it ideal for projects of this kind where working space is extremely limited yet lifting capacity cannot be compromised. This popular mini articulated crane is also fully electric and operated by a Lithium-Ion battery, its zero emissions operation makes it even more perfect for working in sensitive indoor environments like Westfield Shopping centre. GGR's range of specialist lifting equipment is regularly hired to help on many shopfront glazing projects – check out our glazing work gallery here.
